My Role in Life

A few years ago, I took a psychology class. The prof asked us what additional or weird "commandment" our family had. By that he meant what ritual or odd behavior was typified by us or someone else in our family. As an example he gave us one of his: "Thou shalt not be the first on your block to set out your trash on garbage night."
His father had an obsessive need to follow, not lead and that was played out in the extreme every week. The night before garbage pick up, his father would get up and and down several times an hour after dinner to peer out the window and see if any of the neighbors had yet set out their trash bins by the curb. He could not, would not ever be the first to do so, or even the second or third.
Mine was "Thou shalt always set the bad example." As the oldest and as the spirited individualist that I was from an early age, I was clearly the one in the family that my mother expected the worst from always. In the endless battle between us, I often let her win those skirmishes It was rather fun sometimes to live up to her worst opinion of me. I still do it sometimes. When someone is impossible to please, why bother?
I told her on Friday the tale of my boss and the black thong. Hee hee...you could hear her scream all the way from Dallas.
I enjoy the bad example, because in my definition, it's not nearly as bad as she likes to think it is.
