Clerk assaulted with can of Rock Star energy drink, robbers flee with condoms

FREMONT - That energy drink sure packed a heck of a punch.

A gas station clerk was assaulted with a can of Rock Star energy drink early Monday as two men stole a box of condoms from the business, police said.

Authorities Monday afternoon had located the getaway vehicle and still were investigating, but had not arrested anyone in connection with the crime, Sgt. Chris Mazzone said.

The clerk was working inside the mini mart at U.S. Gasoline, near the corner of Fremont and Grimmer boulevards, about 3:35 a.m. when a dark green Toyota Camry pulled into the parking lot, the sergeant said.

The two men, whom the clerk recognized from a prior incident, got out of the car and entered the business, Mazzone said. One of them went to the drink cooler, while the other went to the counter and asked to purchase a box of condoms, Mazzone said.

Unhappy with the price, the man at the counter began haggling with the clerk. Moments later, the other man emerged from the cooler with three cans of energy drink, one of which he threw at the clerk.

The can struck the employee in the face.

The other robber then grabbed the box of condoms from the clerk's hand, and both men sped off in the Camry, Mazzone said.

Police found the vehicle parked at a nearby apartment complex and contacted its owner.

She said she drove three men to the gas station, but said she didn't know who they were.
