Me Big and Strong! (yeah, right).
Aug. 17th, 2006 08:38 amI'm not exactly sure why I do this to myself, but last night I headed to the grocery stores to lay in supplies. I confess I haven't done this properly in far too long. I discovered, while I was home ill that my pantry consisted of: corn starch, dried pasta, oatmeal and currants. There was almost nothing in my fridge that wasn't green and fuzzy with the exception of yogurt. My initial plan to was to get some stuff now and the balance of what I wanted, in order to restock my kitchen, this weekend. Because of that I simply grabbed my rolling back pack. It's sufficient to hold a bag or two bags of sacked groceries (Brown bag not those teeny, tiny plastic bags). I've been known to easily cram $80.00 worth of groceries into my rolling back pack--easy peasy.
I headed to Trader Joe's first. I haven't been there in forever. $51.00 later my backpack is crammed full and I still haven't hit Albertson's for the other items on my list. ACK! $63.00 later I stagger back to the bus weighed down with 100 pounds of groceries. My backpack filled to bursting, I tied plastic bags, looped through the straps and propped a large paper bag on top, leaning against the extended handle. I got home 40 minutes later (thank Gods the bus drops me a half block from my house) I was huffing and puffing and wobbly.
As much as I may sound like I'm whining here, all that stubborn effort of 'doing it all by my big ol' self is worth it. I now have the means to eat far more healthy then I have been. The only thing left for me to get are a few more fresh veggies at the farmer's market on Saturday and a bag of dog food.
Still, last night is an example of the rare times I miss having a car. I was actually tempted to call a cab, or call Dr S. for a ride but, being the stubborn brat that I am, I refused to spend that extra money on a taxi or call and admit to a friend that I was unable to fetch and carry for myself. Yes.Stubborn.Brat. You're not surprised by that, I trust.
I think next time I get a dog it's going to be a Great Dane or an Irish Wolfhound or a Grand Pyrenees so I can train them to pull a cart behind them.
And while I'm dreaming, I'd like a pony, please.
